What was exploited
Upper rear-wing flap corners lifting at speed to open the slot gap, shedding drag on the straights — a passive, load-activated DRS.
The gap in the rulebook
Slot-gap conformity was checked statically with an 85 mm gauge under only 10 N of load. A wing stiff at 10 N can still open under aerodynamic load.
What it was worth
Straight-line speed.
How it was closed — Regulation amendment
The FIA confirmed the wing complied as written, but asked McLaren to change it. Closed properly for 2025 by raising the gauge load from 10 N to 30 N and adding a new Article 3.15.17 rear wing tip test.
Why it matters
A device the governing body publicly agreed was legal, changed anyway after a request. Survived its season, which puts it on the geometry side of the thesis.
